Sheldon Marsh is a popular attraction for birders and nature lovers in the area. Located on the northside of U.S. Highway 6, the preserve is six miles east of Sandusky and two miles west of Huron. The preserve's trails lead to the shoreline, which is ideal for birding. Marsh birds can be seen throughout the year, but migrant songbirds visit the marsh in spring. The preserve is open on weekends, and there are additional hours of operation during different seasons.
The Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve is an area of 472 acres that is part of the Sandusky Bay region. It features a 1.5-mile paved main trail, wheelchair access, and a beach walking area. The marsh changes with high water levels. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources acquired the property in 1979 and added an additional barrier beach and marsh. In 1980, the preserve was designated a state nature preserve. Check it out here
In the Huron area, the Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve is the best place to see local wildlife. The park has three distinct sections, including the marsh, bog, and riparian areas. Visitors can also see hundreds of species of birds while walking along paved trails and observing wildlife. You'll love this natural area and will be glad you visited! It's also close to a number of recreational facilities, including the James H. McBride Arboretum.
The Mentor Marsh was designated a state nature preserve in 1971. It is also an Interpretive Nature Preserve. The Mentor Marsh Committee works to raise education and stewardship funds. The Mentor Marsh Wake Robin Trail Boardwalk was destroyed by fire in April 2003 and replaced in the same year. The Lubrizol Corporation provided $5,000 to help offset the cost of replacing the $84,000 boardwalk. The museum and the community have benefited greatly from the restoration of the marsh. Learn more
